Rainy Drives Playlist: Hollywood is a neighborhood in the central region of Los Angeles, California. Given Hollywood's status as a center of movie production, the name functions as a shorthand for the film industry in many cultures and languages. The result has been a proliferation of portmanteaus in other countries for similar places which are tied to film. Likely the best known example is Bollywood which is the Indian film industry which is based in Mumbai and formerly referred to as Bombay. Lollywood is the Pakistani film industry based in both Karachi and Lahore. A few other examples are Görliwood for the Görlitz/Zgorzelec metropolitan area along the Lusatian Neisse River, HollyŁódź in Łódź, Poland, Tollywood from Tollygunge or Telugu-language film, Mollywood from Malayalam film industry based in Kerala and Hollywood. Hollywood has come to be a shorthand reference for the U.S. film industry and the people associated with it. Many of its studios such as Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers, and Universal Pictures were founded there and Paramount Pictures still has its studios there. Hollywood was incorporated as a municipality in 1903. It was consolidated with the city of Los Angeles in 1910, and soon thereafter a prominent film industry emerged, eventually becoming the most recognizable in the world. Los Angeles, officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the largest city in California. With an estimated population of nearly four million people, it is the second-most populous city in the United States (after New York City) and the third-most populous city in North America (after Mexico City and New York City). Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, Hollywood entertainment industry, and its sprawling metropolis.
