- The Dancestar Music Awards were created by ‘MOBO Awards’ Co-Founder, Andy Ruffell, and launched in the year 2000 in London. At this time Electronic Music was seen as an underground scene. The mission of the awards show was to create a televised platform to showcase the talent and diversity of the Electronic Music community whilst providing unrivaled exposure for DJ’s and artists that at the time MTV wouldn’t play! During this period in Electronic Music’s development, It was an incredibly difficult task trying to convince broadcasters of the power and reach of Electronic Music, most TV executives had never heard of the top DJ’s and they certainly weren’t aware that even then, festivals like Ultra in Miami were pulling in 60,000 people and Fat Boy Slim recently attracted 1m people to the beach in Brighton, England. The show was launched on a grand scale in 2000 at Alexander Palace, London with over 5,000 industry attendees and 21 TV Cameras capturing every angle. Certainly, nothing like it had been done before in the Electronic Music space, and whilst a risky proposition due to all the unknowns, Channel 4 came onboard and broadcast the show to great acclaim. The show continued to expand annually and in 2002, Dancestar was also launched in Miami during The Winter Music Conference, taking over six blocks of sand on Miami Beach. In all, six Dancestar shows were staged between 2000 and 2004 on both sides of the Atlantic with Dancestar USA 2004 credited as the most widely televised Electronic Music event in history, broadcast in over 50 countries to an estimated 600 million households. The exposure created for DJs and their music ran to many millions of dollars worth of media coverage. Billed as the ‘Oscars Of Electronic Music’ Dancestar featured 21 award categories and 8 live performances and collaborations. The nominees were decided by the Dancestar Academy with the winners decided by the fans, with over 600,000 online votes annually. The TV shows were hosted by superstar DJs and Hollywood Stars; Boy George, Roger Sanchez, Erick Morillo, Juliette Lewis, Tess Daly, Rosalyn Sanchez, and Carmen Electra.
