This is a waulking song. Waulking, or fulling, was a step in the process of the creation of wool cloth where the woven wool was beaten, usually by a group of women, either with their fists or feet to make the cloth softer and more supple. Waulking songs were sung, much like sea chanties, to keep the group in rhythm as they beat the cloth.
