Iran’s seawater transfer project is an ambitious solution to the country’s water crisis. The project involves a 3,700 km pipeline that carries water from the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman to the arid provinces. Started in 2014, the project costs more than $23 billion and uses modern desalination technology. Major challenges such as geographical conditions and environmental impacts have been overcome with innovation and sustainable solutions. The project is designed to support the water needs of the population, industry and agriculture, while also becoming a model of sustainable infrastructure for the Middle East region. 1.
