February 19th, 2024, marked 70 years since the day Nikita Krushchev transferred the Crimean peninsula to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic During the Soviet times, a change in internal borders had no affect on the average Soviet citizen, as people could move around freely. However, it all changed after 1991, when the Soviet Union ceased to exist, and Soviet people, who previously did not encounter discrimination because of their ethnicity or the language they spoke, suddenly found themselves facing nationalism.
