Leonid Mikhailovich Kharitonov (Леонид Михайлович Харитонов) sings an aria from the opera Ivan Susanin, the first Russian national opera, composed by Mikhail Glinka in 1836. Libretto by Baron G. Rosen. The opera is also known as “Life for the Tsar“. This concert performance was recorded in 1988; piano accompaniment by Galina Boldina (not Bolden - my mistake). Ivan Susanin in the opera is a Russian peasant and patriotic hero of the 17th century who saves his motherland by his brave actions. ----------------------------------------------------------------- LYRICS: ENGLISH TRANSLATION They sense the truth! Death is near I'm not afraid of it - I have fulfilled my duty. Accept my ashes, mother earth! You'll rise, my dawn, Will throw light over the world, Will rise for the last time Burning with your friendly beam! The Lord is in need of me. Don't leave me alone! My fate is bitter, My sorrow is heavy, Anguish crept into my chest, Grief lay upon my heart... It's hard for me to die But my duty is pure and holy! Rise, rise, my dawn! Spill light over the world, Look at my Rus (Russia) Warm it with your beam! My time has come, my death hour, Give me strength, native mother earth, Give me strength for the last time... My time has come. Accept my ashes, earth! And in my death hour And in my death hour You fortify my strength!.. -------------------------------------------------------------- Website of Leonid Kharitonov:
