Built in 1935 and long respected as a symbol of Latvia’s independence, Freedom Monument in Riga has seen the country’s occupation by both the Soviets and the Nazis and Latvia’s subsequent liberation. Standing more than 40 metres tall, with a woman, affectionately known as Milda, on top holding three stars, the monument is to this day, the centrepiece of many Latvian political and cultural events.
