“Berserkir“ is a term which is mainly found in poems like Haraldskvæði or the Edda but it is not sure, that the term was really in common use by that time. It is rarely found in ancient battle reports. This berserker-like fightingstyle, however, was seen at many Germanic tribes. With “Furor Teutonicus“ the Roman poet Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (d. AD 65) described the merciless, raging and reckless fury of the Teutones in combat: “In battle they cheered because they hoped to die a glorious exhilarating death.“ / “They assaulted with the velocity and violence of a firestorm: foolhardy and fearless with beastly voices and dreadful shouts.“
