The protests, primarily led by young activists opposing tax hikes, have resulted in at least 23 fatalities and numerous injuries as police clashed violently with demonstrators. On June 25, 2024, violence escalated when protesters stormed the parliament building in Nairobi, prompting police to respond with tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, resulting in multiple deaths. The Kenya Medical Association initially reported five deaths and 31 injuries, but the death toll has since risen. Among the victims was 19-year-old Ibrahim Wanjiku, whose funeral turned into a continued protest. The Kenya Human Rights Commission condemned the police’s use of lethal force and called for accountability. Despite the crackdown, protests have spread to over 30 counties, with demonstrators remaining defiant and determined to fight against corruption and for their future..
