I am Der Geher and today I walk through the district of Finkenwerder. From the pier, I walk past the Gorch Fock Hall in the direction of the Kutterhafen. On the dike the way leads along the Köhlfleet. On the streets Auedeich and Sandhöhe there is a flea market. Through residential areas the path leads to the public swimming pool Finkenwerder and through the Gorch Fock Park. Finally, there is a view over the Elbe to Othmarschen. The island of Finkenwerder was formed when a larger island broke apart in several storm surges in the 12th and 13th centuries. At that time the island was named after finches, which were abundant here and were caught. Already in 1594 a protection order for the birds was issued. After the storm surge in 1962, land was filled in so that Finkenwerder is no longer an island today. About 11,500 inhabitants live in the district today.
