The Dovells performing “Bristol Stomp“, released originally in 1961. It reached #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #7 on the US Hot R&B Sides chart. “Bristol Stomp“ is a catchy doo-wop song featuring a “4-over-8“ beat and referencing Bristol, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. Teenagers in Bristol were dancing a step called “The Stomp“ at Good Will Hose Company dances, which inspired the song's title. The song was written by Kal Mann and Dave Appell, executives for Cameo-Parkway Records, a Philadelphia-based label known for its hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Dovells, consisting of Len Barry, Jerry Gross, Arnie Silver, Jim Mealey, and Mike Freda, recorded the track, which went on to sell over one million records and was awarded an RIAA gold record. The Dovells were a talented doo-wop group with versatile singers who could all take on lead roles. Their infectious energy and memorable hits, like “Bristol Stomp,“ have left a lasting impact on the music of the early 1960s and beyond.
