In 1904 for the first time in modern history a European great power was not only defeated but humiliated by a despised Asiatic enemy. The building of the Trans Siberian and Chinese Eastern Railways fuelled Japanese suspicions as to Russian ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. At sea the war led to the destruction of the Russian Far East and Baltic fleets with minimal losses to the British trained Japanese. On land it led to Russian troops being driven out of the Korean peninsula, and overall it severely weakened the position of the Tsar, Nicolas II. Major Gordon Corrigan MBE, a regular guest speaker on the Golden Eagle train, recounts the dramatic events of The Russo-Japanese War in this captivating talk.
