This tax was in effect during the 18th and 19th centuries. The tax was considered a symbol of the oppression and humiliation faced by the lower caste women, who were not allowed to cover their breasts unless they paid this tax. The amount of tax varied depending on the size of a woman's breasts. The breast tax is infamous for its association with the story of Nangeli, a woman from the Ezhava community. According to the story, when the tax collector came to her house to collect the tax, Nangeli cut off her breasts and presented them to him on a plantain leaf. She died from the loss of blood, and her husband, seeing her mutilated body, jumped into her funeral pyre, committing suicide. This event, known as the “Nangeli incident“, is said to have sparked a series of protests and revolts against the caste-based taxes, leading to their abolition. However, it's important to note that the historical accuracy of the Nangeli story is debated among historians. Some argue that there are no contemporary records of the incident and that it first appeared in written records only in the 20th century. The breast tax and other similar discriminatory practices were eventually abolished in Travancore and other parts of India due to social reform movements and the process of modernization and democratization. 1.
