Oleg Akkuratov in concert with his jazz trio,at the Kremlin Philharmonic concert hall, Nizhny. He’s a child prodigy, a virtuoso classical pianist, and also a virtuoso jazz pianist and singer, and still a very young guy. The concert was dedicated to Ray Charles, who was also blind, like Akkuratov. Akkuratov is easily one of the most talented musicians I’ve heard in my life, which is saying something, given the very high talent level of classical and jazz pianists in Russia. The guy has immensely wide range, has a great sense of humor, mixes phrases of classic music into his jazz improvisations, and has totally perfect pitch. He’s the only Russian I’ve known to speak and sing in perfectly unaccented English, and not only that, but in several different “voices“ and accents, each one of them perfect, like a deep South accent when he sang “Georgia on my Mind“, and a more country accent when he sang “Busted“ by Johnny Cash.
