The Battle of Monte Cassino between 17 January 1944 and 18 May 1944 was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Second World War with heavy losses on both sides. It was fought by the Allies with the intention of breaking through the Winter Line and seizing Rome. One of the most important stratigic points of that defending line was the Monte Cassino, where the 1,300 years old abbey of St. Benedict stood on the top. After American bombers had destroyed the abbey, the German Wehrmacht moved into the ruins and barricaded there for several months. After three months of bloddy fights the remaining German soldiers waved the white flag on the morning of May 18th. The battle is also known as a battle of many nations, because of the lots of nations fighting for the Allies (what is alluded by the name “Union“).
