After weeks of uncertainty Biden, 81, announced on Sunday that he would not seek re-election and endorsed Kamala Harris, his vice-president, to take his place as Democratic nominee. He delivered an 11-minute speech from behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office from 8pm (1am UK time). Before the address Donald Trump spoke at a rally in North Carolina, repeatedly attacking Harris as a radical leftwinger.
