Helen Keller (1880-1968) was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor's degree. Her teacher and companion was Anne Sullivan, and the story of how Sullivan broke through Keller's isolation to teach her language was the subject of the play and Academy Award winning movie “The Miracle Worker.“ Keller is well-known for her triumph over adversity, but less well-known are her political actions for labor rights, women's suffrage, and other causes.
