Awaiting leadership in Haiti

With the resignation of Haiti’s Acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry, the beleaguered country faces a new direction this week. But the path forward is unclear. A Transitional Presidential Council was expected to be announced Thursday, March 14, following an emergency meeting by Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders, but that plan has reportedly been rejected by Haitian political figures. On Thursday Haiti’s National Penitentiary was on fire, as gunshots echoed throughout the capital. No prisoners were housed in the penitentiary, after a recent gang-led jailbreak freed more than 4,000 inmates and the rest were relocated. Kenya is still expected to send 1,000 police officers to lead a UN Security support mission in Haiti to help quell the violence that has overrun Port-au-Prince. Kenya’s President Ruto said late on Wednesday that the mission can still go forward once a transitional presidential council is formed in Haiti. Hear from Haitians in Port-au-Prince about the situation, and what’s next.
