Peter Maris' 1988 action flick TERROR SQUAD boasts what I consider one of the most underrated car chases in the history of cinema. Chuck Connors is the local sheriff of a small Indiana town targeted by Libyan terrorists plotting to sabotage a nuclear plant. When that plan falls through, the terrorists go on the run, eventually ending up taking a high school detention class hostage. But before the film fully becomes “INVASION USA meets THE BREAKFAST CLUB“ nearly a third of the movie is devoted to a car chase that includes a little bit of everything: crashes, explosions, gunfire, destroyed infrastructure, hit & run, light comedy, and even a drive-by massacre when the terrorists decide to just mow down everyone in the town square. Writer Mark Verheiden crafted the story for this before going on to give the world Timecop and script episodes of Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, Heroes, and Falling Skies.
