One of the most famous prisons in the world located on legendary Alcatraz Island (The Rock) in San Francisco Bay. From 1934 until its closure in 1963 there was a maximum high-security federal penitentiary. Today, the island is operated by the National Park Service (part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area) and has become a very popular tourist destination in San Francisco.
