A BRUCKNER A MONTH The Hail Mary, Ave Maria in Latin, has been set to music numerous times by many famous composers. Anton Bruckner wrote three different settings, the best known being a motet for seven voices. The version we played for the 4th video in our series (WAB 7), is the least known. In the summer of 1881 Bruckner met Luise Hochleitner, a singer with a beautiful alto voice. He promised to dedicate an Ave Maria to her. The work, which was composed almost 20 years after his more famous motet, is originally written for alto solo voice and keyboard (organ, piano or harmonium). We were given the chance to record our 4th video in the beautiful Uilenburger synagogue. It was originally established in 1766 for the holding of Jewish religious services, and it served as such for nearly 200 years. Following the Second World War, the building was used for various purposes, and has since been handed over by the Municipality of Amsterdam to the Uilenburgersjoel Foundation. This foundation was set up at the end of 2002 with the aim of giving the Uilenburger synagogue back it’s Jewish character and making it a social and cultural centre for a variety of Jewish organizations. We hope you’ll enjoy it! •••• Jeffrey Kant - Tenor Trombone Dani Quiles Cascant - Tenor Trombone Sebastiaan Kemner - Tenor Trombone Marijn Migchielsen - Contrabass Trombone •••• Made possible by Uilenburgersjoel. •••• Video: Margot de Heide / Studio Flabbergasted
