More than 200 people have been detained during riots organised by supporters of independence from France in New Caledonia On Wednesday, French authorities announced that they are sending soldiers to New Caledonia “to ensure the security of ports and airports“. They promised that the army will not be on the streets. New Caledonia is a French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean (near Australia) with a special status, governed by a high commissioner appointed by the President of France. Since 2018, three referendums on independence have been held in New Caledonia, all three ending in victory for supporters of remaining part of France, with Macron promising to expand autonomy. #3 Our channel: Node of Time EN Source: Node of Time EN
