This video demonstrates how I paint structures in nature. When I paint outdoors I pretty much always sketch in the composition with an umber(raw umber or burnt umber) right away to establish my lights and darks. I especially want to capture the shadow shapes as they will change quickly in the morning hours. I have always loved this barn. Having driven by it many times, this is the first time that I've painted it. It would make a cool studio space. The key with painting structures are the proportions. Make sure to do comparisons of height to width in the drawing stage often ,so that it reads correctly. Buildings are built to withstand the test of time. Unless you are working with a leaning 200 year old barn or are intentionally exaggerating the shapes in an expressive way, then follow the proportioning idea I mentioned before.
