The ranunculus flower (common names: blister buttercup, celery buttercup, celery leaved crowfoot, celery ranunculus, celery-leaf buttercup, celeryleaf buttercup, celery-leaf crowfoot, celery-leaf crowsfoot, celery-leaved buttercup, cursed buttercup, cursed crowfoot, cursed crowsfoot, marsh crowfoot, poison buttercup ) is a symbol of attractiveness and charm. The ranunculus flower is also a symbol of careless behavior, and this symbolic meaning was derived from an ancient story created by Native Americans. There is an old legend about a coyote that played with his eyes by throwing them into the sky and catching them. While he was doing that an eagle came flying over him and caught his eyes. Poor coyote couldn’t see anything, so he picked two small ranunculus flowers and made them into his eyes. Since then the ranunculus flower became a symbol of careless behavior. The Latin name Ranunculus comes from the word “rana” which means frog and the word unclus means small. When combined, these two words give the name small frog. Probably the flower reminded people about a small frog in the field.
