Shiretoko Peninsula is located on the eastern side of Hokkaido and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Shiretoko is the southernmost location at which sea ice is regularly formed. Shiretoko Peninsula is covered with primeval forest and rich in wildlife such as the Yezo sika deer, Steller sea lion, and the brown bear.
