Antibiotics - Mechanisms of Action (Classification) and Antibiotic Resistance

Hey Friends, Antibiotics are a specific type of medicine directed against bacteria. Penicillin was the first available antibiotic on the market. There are multiple antibiotics such as Beta Lactams, Tetracycline or Rifamycin. All have different mechanisms of action. The overuse of antibiotics can promote mutations in the bacterial genome. When the mutation alters the protein structure of one of the antibiotic targets (enzymes e.g. Transpeptidase) by chance this can lead to antibiotic resistance. Multiresistent germs are extremely dangerous and we have to find new antibiotics to prevent to fight them but also be more responsible with the antibiotics we have!
