Officer Nick Ferara was at LAPD Harbor Station meeting with a member of the community when a nearby child started choking and having a seizure. Ferara, with no time to wait for an ambulance, lept into action and took control of the situation. Holding one-year-old Louis Benitez in one hand, he began patting him hard on the back, in accordance with LAPD CPR training for a child. Miraculously, little Louis started breathing again, and Ferara was able to put him in the recovery position until an ambulance arrived. Louis went on to make a complete recovery. Meanwhile, the adventures of Nick Ferara continued. After taking some time out to talk to the press and encourage more people to learn first aid, he went on to save an abandoned puppy.
