Кропоткина и 14 марта 1879 г. в Петербурге после покушения на шефа жандармов Дрентельна). В ней нет ни слова о Николае Втором, зато упоминается инициировавший обыски генерал А.Р. Дрентельн. Позже, в эпоху революции 1905-1907 годов, появился новый вариант этой песни под названием «Митя Трепов-генерал». Как несложно догадаться, в ней появляется вместо Дрентельна Д.Ф. Трепов — обер-полицмейстер Москвы, а затем Петербурга (1904 — 1906 гг.). Основная тема песни (обыски) сохранена, но впервые появляются знаменитые строки: «По России слух пошел – Николай с ума сошел».
