The Tundra and Ice Biomes of the Arctic and Antarctic. In this video we explore how the weak sun leads to cold temperatures year round and what kind of plants and vegetation, if any, can survive here. Moss and lichen are the most common in the tundra, but upon the ice sheet of Greenland and Antarctica, nothing survives the year-round freeze. We find the tundra along the coasts of Siberia in Russia, in the north of Alaska, and in northern Canada, which possesses most of the treeless tundra in the world by land area, from the Northwest Territories to Nunavut. The coastal areas of Greenland are also in the tundra biome. The ice biome is found only in Greenland and Antarctica, which, between them hold most of the world's fresh water. Isolated glaciers in mountainous areas in the Rockies, Andes, Alps and Himalayas make up a tiny fraction of the ice biome, and similarly only small areas of alpine tundra in comparison to the Arctic swathes of treeless wastes. The correlation between the tundra and ice biomes, and the tundra and icecap climates is very strong, and explains the near identity of names applied to each. 🕐TIMESTAMPS🕖 👉0:00 Opening Montage 👉0:21 Introduction and Titles 👉1:10 Climate Influence - Tundra and Icecap Climates 👉2:50 Holdridge Lifezones Chart, Alpine Biomes 👉3:24 Permafrost 👉3:54 Tundra Plants and Vegetation 👉5:12 Fauna, Wildlife 👉6:03 Environmental Threats 👉6:36 Review of all LONS08 Biomes in the Series 👉7:38 Outro Please also watch my videos for the full picture of these biomes: 👉Tundra Climate: 👀 👉Icecap Climate: 👀 - - FURTHER READING: LONS08 - A new world natural vegetation map for global change studies - Holdridge Life Zones - Additional Charts, Maps and Images along with the narrative script 👉 📷📹🎥 VIDEO & PHOTO CREDITS ❤️❤️❤️ #credits Please support the development of this channel by remembering to 👍 Like, 🔁 Share and 🔴 Subscribe.
