I:83 (1785) Allegro spiritoso / Andante / Menuet. Allegretto – Trio / Finale. Vivace Joseph Haydn loved the harmony of nature and culture, of humans and animals. His rural origins in the market town of Rohrau probably sowed the first seeds of the magnificent hymn to life spent in close proximity to nature which he conjured up in his last great achievement, the oratorio The Seasons. In that work we hear the cock crowing at sunrise – but not a single hen clucks. Haydn’s attitude to the hen remains unclear. And whether the ‘Paris’ Symphony really has a right to its later nickname ‘La Poule’ remains, as is so often the case with these epithets, in the realm of the uncertain. What is sure, though, is that the name refers to the rhythmic oboe motif that accompanies the first movement’s second theme – more clucking than cackling. Undaunted in its sonic explorations, Haydn2032 now sets off on the potential trail of the hen in the truly cackling theme of Symphony ’s finale and the ‘limping hen’ tune of the Menuet alla zoppa from Symphony . As if that were not enough, Giovanni Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico will also set cock and hen, dog and cat loose in the Capriccio stravagante of the Italian Baroque composer Carlo Farina. So you can look forward to a concert of genuine animal pleasures! Haydn2032 In the lead-up to the 300th anniversary of Joseph Haydn's birth in 2032, the Joseph Haydn Foundation in Basel is organising, producing and financing the performance and recording of all 107 of the composer's symphonies by Il Giardino Armonico and Basel Chamber Orchestra under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, one of the most highly-respected specialists in baroque, early classical and classical music, with its project Haydn2032. The recordings are released on CD and in a luxury vinyl collector's edition in book form. The French group Outhere Music / Alpha Classis acts as partner for the recordings. The first fourteen volumes have been released on CD and 9 volumes on vinyl with two further volumes planned for release every year. Joseph Haydn Foundation, Haydn2032 (c) Martin Parr, Magnum Photos
