Leonard Bernstein conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker in a performance of Mahler’s 1st symphony, 4rd movement (Finale). This is the longest movement of this symphony at a length of 19 minutes, and is mainly set in the keys of F Minor and D Major. This is the 4th of 46 teaser videos to the upcoming “Bernstein - The 10 Mahler Symphonies Das Lied von der Erde” project. The fourth movement, in sonata-allegro form, is by far the most involved, and expansive. It brings back several elements from the first movement, unifying the symphony as a whole. The movement's introduction begins with an abrupt cymbal crash, a loud chord in the upper woodwinds, string and brass, and a timpani roll, all in succession. This contrasts greatly with the end of the third movement. As the strings continue in a frenzy of notes, fragments of the first theme of the exposition, in F minor, appear, presented forcefully in the brass, before being played in entirety by the majority of winds.
