Crow’s Feet is that song, the one whose lyrical story changes over time. Originally, I wrote it about tour life, but it later transformed to encapsulate feelings of grief and loss and learning how to sit with those feelings and eventually move forward. When Kaboom Collective wrote and performed the arrangement for Crow’s Feet, it felt like the song finally found its home – like it finally belonged. After two years of dodging it, I (Sav) tested positive for COVID on the first day of the Kaboom Collective Reimagined tour. With 12 shows on the books and 40 students relying on us, we had to figure out a way to safely carry on. One of the hardest things is to feel like you’re letting everybody down and to have no control over that. But one of the greatest things is knowing that your best friends have your back and are going to do whatever they have to do to take care of you and the things that are important to you. While I recovered, Katie and Michael stepped up and learned all of the songs with the Kaboom Collective. It wasn’t without difficulty, or stress, or anxiety, but in spite of all those things. In that time and space, Crow’s Feet took on a whole new meaning – it had been about tour life, and then about loss and grief, and now it was about what’s left, when everything seems lost- it’s always the people that count. The people we do life with that matter. I hope you have a song that changes over time for you. I hope you find new meaning in it with each listen. I hope that song tells you the truth. Crow’s Feet does that for me. This is a true story.
