Barra da Tijuca is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro at the turn of the 20th century to the 21st century; increased from 24,000 inhabitants in 1980 to 394,000 inhabitants in 2020. Currently, it is considered a financial, gastronomic, hotel and entertainment center in the state capital. It has been the target of migration from other neighborhoods in the municipality. It is estimated that the population of Barra will double by 2030. Barra da Tijuca beach is the main beach in the region and stretches along Avenida Lúcio Costa to Recreio dos Bandeirantes. It is the largest beach in the state of Rio de Janeiro, eighteen kilometers long and its sands are white and fine. From Ayrton Senna avenue the beach has no boardwalk, as it is a region of environmental preservation. It has strong, tubular waves and very good for surfing and bodyboarding. There are several stages of Brazilian and even world championships such as WSL. The Marapendi Reserve is located in the immediate vicinity. The main sports practiced in the sea at Barra da Tijuca beach are edge fishing, kitesurfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, surfing and Stand up Paddle, and is also the stage for many championships. On its edge, it is very common to find people practicing other sports, such as beach soccer, footvolley, volleyball, paddleball, slackline and even taking walks on the boardwalk or cycling along the bike path.
