Howdy. Today we will look at three lost (considered temporary) triumphal arches that existed in New York City over one hundred years ago. Each was seemingly modeled after an earlier ancient Roman design, and one of these arches was actually rebuilt and made permanent, and still exists in Manhattan today. We will look exclusively at the photographs of the Temporary Victory Arches of New York City, taken in the few short months they existed, including The Washington Arch (temporary structure built 1889, made permanent 1891), The Dewey Arch (built 1899, demolished 1900), and The Victory Arch (built 1918, demolished 1920). We will also cover a brief current narrative summary of each. I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas about these Lost Arches of Manhattan down below!
