Originally written for violin and piano, but later orchestrated by the composer, “Chanson de Nuit“ is the companion piece to “Chanson de Matin“. The two pieces represent the two sides of Elgar's nature, the dark and the light. “Chanson de Nuit“ is played here by the Northern Sinfonia of England, conducted by Richard Hickox. Henry Pether was an English landscape artist renowned for his depictions of moonlit scenes. His father Abraham and older brother Sebastian Pether also painted moonlit scenes. Together they were known as the “Moonlight Pethers“.
