In Part 2, we’re diving into the heart of our tool post grinder: making the spindles. From transforming raw steel into precision-machined components to assembling them with meticulous care, this episode is packed with action. We’ll guide you through the intricacies of turning and boring hollow steel on the lathe, ensuring the perfect fit for the bearings. Then it’s time to make the spindle shafts, starting with all the work on the lathe which involves a lot of precision turning, drilling and tapping and also cutting an external thread for the locking nut. Once we’ve got both external and internal shafts machined it’s over to the mill to cut the keyways, a crucial step in ensuring smooth operation of the future pulleys. Once the individual components are ready, we’ll assemble the spindles, installing all the bearings and fitting the shafts into the housings. The moment of truth arrives as we test the fit between the spindles and the mount and clamps we built in Part 1. Will everything come together as planned? Tune in to find out!
