The 15,000 fans in the audience at Arena Di Verona on April 26, 1989 were magically transported from a 1st Century Roman amphitheater to a gospel church in the Deep South, as Elton placed his trio of backing vocalists front and centre for “Sad Songs (Say So Much)”. Mortonette Jenkins, Marlena Jeter, and Kudisan Kai each take a turn to trade phrases with Elton, before the 8-piece band come in, turning the track into an 8-minute blues-rock stomper.
