We won’t vote for genocide!’ That is what protesters chanted during Democratic Party presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ 7 August rally in Detroit, Michigan. Her response? ‘If you want Donald Trump, then say that.’ But is that a policy? And is it fair to imply pro-Palestine protesters are aligned with the former president because they reject Harris’ position? The US administration of President Joe Biden, in which Harris serves as vice president, has provided tens of billions of dollars in funding and arms to the Israeli occupation that has allowed it to k*ll nearly 40,000 Palestinians, at minimum. Then, on 9 August, protesters again called her out at a rally in Glendale, Arizona, near Phoenix. This time, she stated, ‘Now is the time to get a ceasefire deal.’ However, given the US is Israel’s largest funder, all Harris would need to do is stop arming and funding Israel to put a halt to the military onslaught that has raged since 7 October. Harris has been staunchly pro-Israel for decades. As a US senator representing California, she co-sponsored a bill against ‘anti-Israel bias’ to block UN support for Palestinians. According to @TrackAIPAC, Harris has received more than $5.3 million in funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the most powerful pro-Israel lobby group in the US. Plus, she has travelled to Israel, meeting alleged war criminals, such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Some people see African Stream’s posts on this year’s US presidential candidates and reply, ‘Yes, imperialism is bad, but…’ and then proceed to say they would like universal healthcare, guaranteed reproductive rights, action on climate change, free university education, and more. However, many counter that the Democratic Party has proven itself incapable of meeting people’s needs as a consequence of being funded by sectors, like Wall Street and the military-industrial complex.
