This brief and un-narrated film shows the operation of the narrow gauge locomotive #476, a 2-8-2 Mikado built by the American Locomotive Company or ALCO, on the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW). The same engine was sold to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG) in 1981. The film opens with shots of steam locomotive 476 (:18). The tourist train pulls out from the station and approaches a bend in the track (1:30). It rolls past a small workman's shack (1:48). A view from aboard the train captures telephone poles flicking by (2:21). The train crosses a bridge and passes spectators (2:56). The train slows and the conductor waves on any potential riders (3:30). It then pauses on the bridge as the engine smokes (3:39). With a quick burst of steam and clanging steel, the train starts up again (3:59). Passengers are shown on an open air observation car (5:30) as the train rumbles on. Built in 1923, locomotive 476 pulled trains on the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) narrow gauge system until being moved to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG). It operated excursions on the D&SNG until being taken out of service in late 1999 and placed on display in the D&SNG roundhouse museum. It was recently restored and is now being converted to burn oil instead of coal.
