Description of Eiji Uchida's Between Men and the Gods (Kami to hito to no aida) from the Tokyo International Film Festival: “Smalltown doctor Hozumi and his close friend, cartoonist Soeda, both fall in love with Asako. Hozumi steps back and allows Soeda to marry her. But he becomes sadistic, abusing Asako and taking a mistress. Hozumi never stops loving Asako, but in the wake of an unfortunate incident, his pure love transforms into hatred. Prolific filmmaker Eiji Uchida, who directed Lowlife Love [and] Double Mints [ ] adapts Junichiro Tanizaki's semi-autobiographical novel which depicts a triangular affair between his first wife and a poet friend, setting it in the modern day and injecting it with his style of cynical black humor.“
