On 1 May 2003, the U.S. declared the end of the war in Iraq. The official goals of the invasion were to fight international terrorism and overthrow dictator Saddam Hussein. However, although American troops captured him in December 2003, the war in Iraq dragged on until 2011. An estimated half a million people died in Iraq during that time. More deaths followed after the emergence of the Islamic State in the country — a direct result of the U.S. occupation. Listen to some of the victims of the intervention in our video.
