Bach-Stiftung Rudolf Lutz Annibale Carracci - Saint John the Baptist Bearing Witness ca. 1600 Bartholomeus Breenbergh - The Preaching of John the Baptist, 1634 Freue dich, erlöste Schar (Rejoice, redeemed flock), BWV 30, is a cantata for the Feast of St. John the Baptist, premiered on June 24, 1738 in Leipzig. The feast of Saint John the Baptist (Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, Nativitas Ioannis Baptistae, Geburt Johannes' des Täufers) is celebrated on June 24 in the church calendar, six months before Christmas. This is based on the words of the angel Gabriel in Luke , who tells Mary that her kinswoman Elizabeth conceived a child six months ago. Since there is no historical basis for the date of Christmas in the Bible, the date of the Feast of John the Baptist is not historically accurate either, and should be taken as a reminder of the significance of John the Baptist and his ministry. The Bible readings and texts for the feast of St. John the Baptist in Laipzig were Isaiah about the “voice of one crying in the wilderness“ and Luke about the birth of John the Baptist.
