It is 120 years to the day since Edward VII, the King’s great great grandfather, encouraged the British government to abandon its policy of “splendid isolation” and strike an alliance with its old rival. Edward VII believed that Britain needed a friend in Europe at a time when Germany, under his nephew Kaiser Wilhelm II, was consolidating power with its alliances. Within ten years, Britain would unite with France against Germany in the First World War.
