Here is more information on this tune. The 'melancholic' version, as we play it, is made popular by Jan Morks, a Dutch clarinet player. I remember him very well as I visited the club where he played weekly in the late sixties. This was Ted Easton's jazzclub New Orleans in Scheveningen-on-Sea, Holland. The original version of this tune is played much quicker and was made popular in 1939 by the Andrew Sisters. On Youtube you will find a quick version sung by Edith Wright, accompanied by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, also 1939. By listening you will find out this is not a tragic song at all, as the full text says: 'You don't know how much you can suffer, until you fall in love.' Our version is more or less a jam-session as this is not a regular band and we only rehearsed it once.
