A West African bloc of nations has threatened to conduct a military intervention in Niger if the country’s deposed president is not reinstated within one week. The Economic Community of West African States, known as ECOWAS, has suspended financial aid to Niger and frozen its assets in international banks, after national military leaders seized control of the country last week. Several European powers have also condemned the coup, with former regional colonizer France even threatening to retaliate if any of its citizens are harmed.
