This 1959 color film “Mission: Sonic Boom“ was made at a time when the U.S. Air Force was experiencing criticism for its pilots exceeding Mach 1.0 in training exercises -- producing sonic booms as they raced through the sound barrier that disrupted civilian life and caused property damage. The film represents a public relations effort by Koppers Co., which made sound deadening equipment, attempting to equate the sound of a sonic boom with freedom. Producer Koppers Co. is a global chemical and materials company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the time this film was made, Koppers had just launched a Noise Control division and was manufacturing prefabricated sound traps. The film features the F-105 Thunderchief, a supersonic fighter-bomber used by the United States Air Force that was capable of Mach 2. Title: Koppers Company,
