Hello everyone, it's good to see you again! Fayum portraits - These amazing works of art, often called “icons prior to iconography,“ are not just historical treasures. They can serve as a magnificent and impressive illustration of the mutual penetration of cultures. Fayum portraits were created for burial rituals in ancient Egypt during Roman rule in the I to III centuries AD. They were first discovered in the Fayum Oasis in 1887 and this place gave them the name “Fayum portraits“. The portraits continued to be so called, even after discovering similar items in other areas of Egypt. So far about 750 ancient masterpieces have been collected.
