Here, it features new choreography by Vladimir Varnava, one of Russia’s most popular contemporary choreographers. Boris Tishchenko’s three-act ballet Yaroslavna sets the story of the much-beloved 12th-century Russian epic poem The Tale of Igor’s Campaign—the account of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich’s failed raid against the Polovtsians in 1185—to a strikingly modern score influenced by Japanese gagaku music. The result is a fascinating work that strongly contrasts with Alexander Borodin’s classic 1890 opera, Prince Igor, which was inspired by the same source material. Premiered in 1974 at Leningrad’s Maly Opera Theatre, the original production of Yaroslavna was choreographed by Oleg Vinogradov and directed by Yuri Lyubimov, and turned out to be one of the highlights of 1970s Russian ballet as well as one of Tishchenko’s most celebrated works. Venue: Mariinsky II (St. Petersburg, Russia) Production date: 2017 Duration: 1 h 47 min
