Frankfurt has become the first city in Germany to hang up Ramadan decorations, taking inspiration from London’s display in 2023. Workers have been putting up lights in the shape of stars and crescent moons, with a centerpiece reading ‘Happy Ramadan’ in the city center. Frankfurt is home to an estimated 150,000 Muslims, around 15 percent of its population, who are currently preparing for the start of Ramadan on March 10. Germany’s Green Party, who run Frankfurt, have tried to introduce Ramadan lights before, but were previously blocked by opposition lawmakers. While some have criticized the cost, thought to be between €50,000 and €100,000 ($54,000 - $108,000), city officials say the lights send an important message.
