Videos and photos posted on social media show orange-red fountains of lava shooting into the dark night sky, brightly illuminating it. The eruption was preceded by an earthquake the day before, and authorities declared a state of emergency and evacuations from nearby areas, including the Blue Lagoon resort and spa area. This is the sixth eruption since December 2023, and was expected for several weeks due to ongoing seismic activity in the area. According to Benedikt Ofeigsson, a spokesman for the Icelandic Meteorological Service, the fissure in the ground from which the magma is flowing is 3.9 kilometers long.
